1783 Nova Constellatio, About Uncirculated-58 (PCGS/CAC)
Crosby 1-A: Pointed Rays, Large US

Crosby 1-A ~ CONSTELLATIO with two Ls, followed by a cinquefoil. Pointed rays with thin ends, crudely engraved, with uneven width. Obverse die damage at upper right. Reverse with US in large Roman capitals. A cinquefoil separates LIBERTAS and JUSTITIA.

This is a beautiful Nova Constellatio, which is arguably Mint State. The surfaces are lustrous and medium brown, with actual traces of Mint red still clinging to some of the protected areas. The right reverse is weakly impressed, typical for this die marriage. As a result, the original flan roughness was not struck out, leaving behind a granular surface that is exactly as minted. There are few actual contact marks, and no signs of circulation. Certainly, this is one of the Finest Known of the issue.

PCGS has reports only 3 graded AU-58 with none finer of this variety.
