1920-D Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar
Mint State-66 Full Head (PCGS)
Bold & Brilliant
Boldly struck, even for a 1920-D Quarter, with an unquestionably Full Head and well defined shield rivets, not always a given even on "Full Head" coins, and good feather detail on the eagle's breast. The surfaces are exceptionally frosty, brilliant, and silvery white. Contact marks are literally few, with a single mark between B and Liberty's head, in her drapery above 20, and a thin hairline in the lower left reverse field about all that there is to complain about. Overall, this is an exceptional 1920-D Quarter, solidly Gem Full Head, and significantly finer than the typical MS-66FH.
PCGS reports eight coins certified as MS-66FH, three as MS-67FH, and a single MS-68FH. However, as usual, all PCGS MS66FH coins are not equal. In comparison, another MS-66FH 1920-D (PCGS #6556109) sold early last year (Heritage 5/2007: 574). That PCGS MS66FH shows a "full head" that isn't quite as strong, three weak rivets including one which is barely visible, and less than attractive golden brown toning with a fingerprint pattern over much of the reverse, yet still sold for $18,400.
