1876-S Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar, Mint State-66 (PCGS/SP)
Original Gem, Ex Eliasberg

An exceptionally lustrous Liberty Seated Quarter struck with freshly polished dies, resulting in fields that are unusually semi-prooflike, even within the reverse shield stripes. The surfaces are fully original, and the toning light and natural in shades of peach, violet, and iridescent amber. Some fine toning spots on the lower right reverse do not detract enough to matter. Scattered contact marks in the left obverse field off of Liberty's right shoulder and hand, and a squiggly contact mark and flan chip left of stars 10-11 set the grade.

1876-S is considered to be a relatively common issue overall. However, surprisingly, it becomes scarce to rare in Gem Mint State with only 19 certified by PCGS as MS65 and four MS66s finer.

Provenance:

  • Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr (Bowers and Merena, April 1997: lot 1517 @ $2,640)

$ 7,250
