1835 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar, Proof 64+ (PCGS/SP)
Browning 7, Est. 4-5 Known, Ex Pittman

Browning 7 ~ Star 13 touches hair. No period after 25C. Two prominent reverse die scratches show as raised lines, one in the field below TE, and a longer line connecting the eagle's wing at left with the highest leaf. Perfect die state, as we should expect from a true Proof striking.

This is an unquestionable Proof striking, with deeply mirrored fields in contrast with softly frosted devices. The strike is literally full, with every fine detail complete. Wispy hairlines set the grade, more noticeably on the reverse. Identifiable by the small lintmarks in the obverse field right of star 3, a C shaped lintmark near the bridge of Liberty's nose, and another off of the outside point of star 8, among others. The toning is light and natural with soft shades of reddish gold, framed in subtle iridescence about the rims.

Of the four or five known 1835 Proof Quarters, PCGS has certified only two, a single PR-63 and this PR-64.The other known 1835 Proof Quarters are as follows:

  • Garrett Family Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 3/1980: lot 649 @ $75,000 as "Choice Brilliant Proof")
  • (American Numismatic Rarities 9/2003: lot 266 as PCGS PR63); (Heritage 12/2005: lot 607 @ $20,750 as PCGS PR63 #50062459) - Mottled brown, gold, and gray toning. Either the fifth known, or a reincarnation of the Auction'82 coin below.
  • (RARCOA, "Auction'82", 8/1982: lot 717 @ $5,750 as "Brilliant Proof")
  • Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997: lot 1410 @ $7,700 as "Proof-60"); (Heritage 7/2007:lot 672 @ $4,312 as "ANACS PR60 Details, Graffiti")

  • John Jay Pittman (David Akers, "Pittman II", 5/1998: lot 1293 @ $38,500 as "Choice Proof")
