This is an absolutely Superb Gem, with fully original surfaces and swirling cartwheel luster. Natural amber and violet shades wash over the right half of the obverse, deepening to a broad crescent of rich blue at the right rim. The soft shades of amber and violet carry over to the reverse, most noticeable about the letters and near the rims. Striking quality is often an issue for this denomination, and while this specimen is technically not fully struck, it is certainly close. Look hard with a strong glass to see a shallow obverse contact mark inside of star 12, the only fault you will find.
As the only MS68 of the date and type certified by PCGS, this 1875-S stands as the undisputed Finest Known Mint State Twenty Cent Piece. Earlier from "The Knoxville Collection", possibly the finest Silver Type Coin collection ever assembled.
Provenance:
- Knoxville Collection (Jay Parrino's The Mint, FPL)
