1831 Capped Bust Half Dime, Mint State-67 (PCGS)
Logan-McCloskey 7, Ex Eliasberg, Superb 67+

Logan-McCloskey 7, Valentine 3 - Star 3 repunched with two extra inner points, both 1s in date centered over denticles. Reverse with MERI joined, right edge of C in 5C below tip of stem. (Rarity 2). Obverse die chip in upper loop of 3, developed in prior die marriage (LM.6, V.2). A faint die crack connects the inner points of stars 9-10, another across the top of her cap, and a third from the the top of the cap to the rim. The sixth marriage for this workhorse reverse shows F of OF filled between the middle serif and right base, berries barely visible from relapping of the die, rust pits below RI in the scroll, and a vertical die crack inside the eagle's wing at right.

This is certainly a candidate for the all time finest 1831 Half Dime. Fully struck with all star radials complete, and every delicate detail of Liberty's hair and the eagle's feathers sharply defined. Luster is original and richly frosted at the centers, with semi-prooflike areas nearer the rims. The toning is vivid and natural, comprised of bright blue, green, violet and amber. The surfaces are essentially perfect, with no significant contact marks visible, even under a glass.

Provenance:

  • Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (Bowers and Merena 5/1996: lot 915 @ $13,200 as "MS-66")
  • ONR Private Client
