1834 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar, Mint State-66 (PCGS) Browning 1 - Star 7 repunched. Reverse with remnants of an additional OF first punched far left, and no period after 25C. This reverse die is unique for the series in that it is the only one with double stripes in the shield, rather than the normal triple stripes. (Rarity 1). This is a no-question "WOW" Small Size Capped Bust Quarter. The strike is unquestionably full, with even the finest details complete, and Liberty's hair in bold high relief. A scattering of shallow contact marks is revealed under magnification, yet they are well camouflaged by a delicate bands of champagne gold, amber, powder blue, and olive green toning. Along with 1831, 1834 is one of the more available issues among Small Size Capped Bust Quarters. However, in the upper Mint State grades, the picture changes considerably. PCGS reports only 16 MS66s for the series, and three finer, including two 1834 Quarters certified as MS66, none finer, numbers that have remained static for quite some time. |
