1830/29 Capped Bust Dime, Mint State-67 (PCGS)
John Reich 4, PCGS Pop. 2/0

John Reich 4 - 1830/29 overdate, with 0 entirely under the lowest curl. Reverse with first A in AMERICA recut, scroll ending under left edge of right leg of M in AMERICA. (Rarity 2). One of two marriages employing this overdated obverse die.

Brilliant and frosty white with just a hint of color beginning to reemerge. The centers are weakly struck, causing bluntness in some of Liberty's hair strands and a joining of many of the eagle's neck feathers. There are a few trivial contact marks in the left obverse field and near the center of her jawline, while the reverse is nearly perfect.

PCGS has certified only two 1830/29 Dimes as MS-67, with the third best well behind at MS-64. The other PCGS MS-67 is the James A. Stack, Sr. JR.5 (Stack's 1/1990: lot 39 @ $25,300 as "Finest Known ... Gem Brilliant Uncirculated", later Heritage 8/2006: lot 5138 @ $43,125 as PCGS MS67).

Provenance:

  • (Heritage 5/2005: lot 6381 @ $25,300 as PCGS MS66)
  • (Heritage 3/2006: lot 440 @ $43,125 as PCGS MS67)
  • (Heritage 4/2009: lot 2235 @ $33,350 as PCGS MS67)
