1796 Draped Bust Dime, Small Eagle, Mint State-66 (PCGS) John Reich 4 - BERTY close with TY joined at the top, star 1 distant from lowest curl. Reverse with two berries under the E in UNITED, one inner, one outer, and leaf tip below right base of A in STATES. (Rarity 3). Superb in nearly every respect, this 1796 Dime is considered to be one of the finest examples of the type, and a strong contender for the second finest known behind the PCGS MS-67. It's been said that first impressions are everything, and the incredible combination of color and luster on this specimen make an immediate visual impact. The fields are softly reflective and somewhat prooflike, while the lettering, numerals, stars and devices are frosted in light cameo contrast. The toning is absolutely superb, the obverse light rose, green and gold about the center blending to rich amber, then intense magenta and greenish blue about the rim. The reverse shows a similar pattern, the center a soft rose and violet, blending to a rainbow of deeper violet, blue, yellow and amber encircling the rim. Boldly struck overall but still showing some minor weakness in a few of Liberty's hair strands, and in small patches of the eagle's breast and leg feathers. Some tiny contact marks and short, wispy hairlines are visible under magnification, setting the grade, although none are individually significant. Previously certified by NGC as MS-67. Provenance:
